On behalf of everyone at St. Barnabas, congratulations upon your engagement, and thank you for considering us to conduct the wedding cermony. We hope that the information on this page will help you in your decision and the planning of your wedding. If you have any further questions then please contact one of the clergy team who will be happy to discuss your requirements with you.

The Church teaches that marriage is the right environment for a loving relationship between a man and a woman who commit themselves to one another for life. When the wedding takes place in church it is more specifcally a sign that this relationship is blessed by God.

Who can be married at St. Barnabas?

Anyone who lives within the parish boundary, or who is on the Electoral Roll can be married at St. Barnabas. If you are unsure as to whether or not you live in the parish, then please contact the Parish Office who will be able to advise you.

Since 2008 the Church of England has made it easier for people to marry in a church of their choice, if you can show one of the seven connections with St. Barnabas.

That one of you:

That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

That one of your parents or grandparents:

What if a partner has been married before?

The Church teaches that marriage is for life. It also recognizes that sadly, some marriage's do fail, and we therefore seek to support all involved. The church accepts that in exceptional circumstances, a divorced person may remarry in church during the life-time of their former spouse. Please contact a member of our clergy team to discuss your particular circumstances before making any further plans.

 The Service itself

The service will take approximately 45 minutes, during which you will both make your public vows to each other. You will normally need to choose two or three hyms or songs that you would like. We can provide a list of suggesstions for you to consider. The bride is politely requested to arrive 5 minutes beofre the start of the service to allow for any photographs to be taken before the start of the service. Professional photographers are requested to speak to the Minister before the Service who can advise when and where photographs may be taken during the service; video recording are allowed on the understanding that during the service it is to be unobtrusive. The photographer and person taking the video will need to speak to the minister before the service to discuss what is possible. A licence fee is payable.

The Church of England website has a useful ceremony planner to help you choose your hymns and readings for your special day.

After the Service

The church wil be open after the service if you would like to take any photographs in the church itself. Please do not use confetti inside the churchyard.

The Rehearsal

The Minister will arrange for a rehearsal to take place in church at some point in the week leading upto the service. This is your opportunity to bring your best man and bridesmaid and anyone else involved in your wedding so you can all familiasrise yourself with the service.

How much does it cost

There is a required legal fee for marrying in a church. If you both live within the parish then the fee is £474 for wedings taking place during 2018, which includes all legal necessities.
This basic fees includes the cost of the Rector, the church, calling your banns, the marriage certificate, lighting and all administration.

The statutory fee doesn't include any extras you may choose or decline. These are things like having a verger, extra heating in the church, having an organist, bells, choir or flowers. You do not have to have any of them, but if you choose them they will cost extra. Here at St. Barnabas we strongly encourage you to utilise the services of our Verger, as the verger can assist in the setting up of the church, assisting your ushers, and arranging for the church to be open to receive guests arriving early, or for photographs to be taken within the church after the service. The Verger will also make sure the church is left clean and tidy ready for its next use.

For 2018 the fees for these optional extra's are as follows:-

Verger £40
Organist £50
Choir £50
Bells (before and after the service) £300
Bells (after the service only) £250

The fees quoted on this page are subject to change and are for advisory purposes only. Please contact the Rector for the fees which will apply to your wedding.
