I love walking in Eastham Woods. It has taken about a year for me to think of them as ‘my’ woods and though I am delighted to share them with others (I am sure many of them were there long before I knew they existed) I can get a bit territorial about the place. This is especially true in the summer when people come from all over to take part in the dog shows held nearby.

Being territorial is part of human nature. We can, if we are not careful, see St Barnabas as my church, our church and that make things feel difficult especially in this time when we are growing.

It is not always easy to welcome so many new people into our worshipping community on a Sunday, particularly when we may need to alter our seating position or to share a book. Even when we know it’s not private space, when we like the   people, we can still feel a bit ‘invaded’.

It was wonderful to see the church so full last week for the baptism of Jessica and Jacob. Even more special for me was to see so many of our regular congregation   present at the service (which is why the numbers were so high). Baptism is about   joining the church and beginning on a journey of faith. The service reminds us that ‘in baptism, God is adding to our number those whom he is calling.’ Without baptism faith will die, our church will disappear. Like confirmation it is a sign of growth, a sign of God’s work in the world.

Statistics show that people are much more likely to stay in a church if they have the opportunity to get to know the congregation and it is for that reason too that your presence and your contribution is vital. One way people experience the love of God is through people. YOU are the people here who are called into that role.

Thank you to each one of you who commits to attending on Baptism Sunday. May God give you opportunities on these and other occasions to demonstrate God’s love, to share the good news of Jesus and so to live out the calling that has been given to you through your own baptism.

With every blessing,

Jenny
